I am happy to have been able to deliver this painting of Makybe Diva winning her historic third Melbourne Cup back in 2005 as a suprise commission gift to the Australian Stud Book’s “Keeper of the Book”.

 

Makybe Diva was just a wonder mare – she won nearly every prestigious group race on the Australian calendar – Sydney Cup, Australian Cup, BMW Classic, Cox Plate, Turnbull Stakes, Memsie Stakes, Queen Elizabeth Stakes and of course the 3 consecutive Melbourne Cups.

I love how she was named.   Owner Tony Santic asked his five of his women employees in his fishing business to name his new mare.  They came up with Makybe Diva – using the first two letters of their given names.

The five women were Maureen Dellar, Kylie Bascomb, Belinda Grocke, Dianne Tonkin and Vanessa Parthenis .
