Zabeel – ‘the Superstar stallion’. This is a painting based on from photos I took from my visit to Sir Patrick Hogan’s Cambridge Stud, New Zealand in June 2014. Zabeel was 27 years old when I photographed him and he had only retired from ‘active stud duties’ 6 months before. I just had to paint him, it was winter, it was cold but even though he is old man he looked so peaceful and majestic.
VALE – the Great Zabeel. Zabeel – sire of Octagonal, Might and Power and another 150 stakes winners died peacefully on 25 September at his home at Cambridge Stud. May Zabeel rest in peace buried alongside his father, Sir Tristram.
His sire statistics are simply amazing ………. from the 1389 of his offspring that raced, Zabeel has sired:
- 1007 individual winners,
- more than 150 stakes winners,
- 41 different Group 1 winners, with
- worldwide earnings in excess of $170 million.

I also painted another image of Zabeel that is in the gallery at http://kristinhardiman.com/portfolio/zabeel/
